Louisiana Lawmakers Propose House Bill 221

The proposal comes from House Bill 221. It would name the new Mississippi River bridge the “President Donald J. Trump Expressway," per WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge.

The bill recently passed in the Louisiana House with a vote of 68 to 26. Now, it will head to the Louisiana Senate, where it will be discussed and voted on.

State Representative Michael Echols says the name is meant to draw attention from leaders in Washington, D.C. Lawmakers hope it could help Louisiana secure federal funding to build the bridge. If that happens, it could also help avoid tolling the bridge.

Bridge tolling has been a major topic of conversation over the last few years, with the new I-10 bridge project in Lake Charles set to be paid for by tolls.

The project is expected to cost between $3 billion and $4 billion. So far, about $400 million has already been spent on planning and early work.

Right now, leaders have not picked the exact location for the bridge. They hope to decide by the end of 2026. Three possible locations are being studied, all connecting parts of Highway 1 and Highway 30 near Baton Rouge.

A new bridge is needed in a bad way. If you've ever driven through that traffic, you know exactly what we mean...

The bill also includes a rule. The bridge would only be named after Trump if the federal government gives enough money for the project before January 20, 2029.
